Scaling a Fascia by Eye
Working out cap height and line spacing before a single chalk mark goes up.

A fascia board doesn't come with instructions. A shopfront might be nine feet wide or twenty-six, the board might hang eight feet up or fourteen, and the name going on it might run four letters or four words. None of that changes on delivery day — it has to be worked out beforehand, using nothing more than the building itself, a bit of arithmetic, and a felt-tip held out at arm's length to check the eye's opinion of the numbers. This part of the job looks the least like art and behaves the most like carpentry: measure twice, chalk once, and trust the figures until the eye says otherwise.
Working Backward From the Wall
Every fascia job starts with three numbers that have nothing to do with typography: the width of the board, its height above the sidewalk, and the distance from which most people will actually read it. A corner shop on a narrow street might give a passerby only fifteen feet before the sign is overhead and out of the sightline. A board over a parking lot entrance might be read from eighty feet away through a windshield. Neither distance is negotiable — it comes from where the building sits, not from what the client pictures the letters looking like. On site, this usually means standing across the street with a tape measure and a notepad before opening a single tin of paint, sketching the board's outline at scale and marking where the eye lands first.
Cap Height Is Not a Guess
Once the board's proportions are on paper, cap height gets worked out as a ratio of the board, not a flat number pulled from a supplier's chart. A working figure that's held up on this bench: cap height runs somewhere around sixty to sixty-five percent of the board's usable height, once a margin is left top and bottom so the letters don't crowd the frame. A fourteen-inch board might carry an eight- or nine-inch cap height with room to spare; a board half that size needs the ratio held just as strictly, or the letters end up looking cramped against the edge even though the arithmetic was correct. Lowercase x-height follows from the cap height rather than getting chosen on its own — roughly two-thirds of it, nudged depending on the letterform, since a rounded, bowl-heavy face tends to read a touch smaller than a squared sans at the same nominal height. The optical line does the rest of the correcting once the numbers are down on the board.
The Sightline Arithmetic
Cap height and viewing distance are tied together by a rule of thumb that keeps proving itself: roughly one inch of cap height for every ten feet a sign needs to stay legible from, though that ratio loosens up close and tightens at speed, where a driver only gets a second or two of actual read time. A fascia meant to be read from the opposite sidewalk, thirty feet off, tends to work at a three-inch cap height with a reasonably bold stroke. Push the same lettering out to a hundred feet — a bulletin set back from a road — and the cap height needs to climb toward eight or ten inches before thin strokes and serifs start dissolving into the background. None of this is exact science; it's a starting figure that gets checked by eye before any chalk goes up on the actual wall.

Spacing by Eye, Not by Ruler
Height solved, spacing is where the ruler stops being much help. Optical spacing — leaving equal-looking gaps between letters rather than equal-measured ones — accounts for the fact that an L next to an O reads differently from an H next to an N at the same nominal gap, because the shapes carry different amounts of visual weight. A consistent margin habit keeps the block honest at the edges, but the letter-to-letter spacing inside it gets set by holding a chalk line at arm's length and squinting, not by dividing the board's width by the letter count. It's slower than working from a spacing chart, and harder to explain to a client standing on the sidewalk asking why the painter keeps stepping back and tilting their head — but a metrically even line of lettering almost always reads as visually uneven once it's forty feet in the air.
The tape measure gets a fascia into the right neighborhood. Getting it to actually sit right on the wall is still, after everything, a job for the eye.
When the Numbers and the Eye Disagree
Every one of these ratios bends occasionally, and knowing when to bend them is most of what separates a good layout from a merely correct one. A board mounted under a deep awning reads darker than the same board in open sun, which can justify pushing cap height up half an inch to compensate for the shade. A name heavy on ascenders and descenders — a script, or a face with a lot of lowercase — eats into its own margins and needs the whole block nudged smaller than the arithmetic suggests. None of these adjustments show up on a spec sheet. They show up standing across the street, looking at the chalked-out layout against the actual wall, in the actual light, at the time of day someone is most likely to be reading it.
On-Site Check
A rough check some painters lean on before committing paint: stand at the intended read distance, hold a thumb out at arm's length, and see whether the chalked cap height still reads clearly against the width of the thumbnail. If it doesn't, the ratio table was a starting point, not a verdict.
Four things worth checking before the first pounce mark goes up:
- The board's usable height after trim and any mounting hardware.
- The typical viewing distance from where most foot or vehicle traffic actually passes.
- How much the specific name's ascenders and descenders will eat into the cap-height margin.
- The light and shade the board sits in at the time of day it's most often read.
